Chapter 5
The chaos in the Dark King’s castle aided their escape. Tristan was helped into Finn’s clothes while the others stayed dressed in uniforms they had taken from the guards. It was strange to feel the brush of fabric against his skin after so long without, and because of the ankle cuffs he couldn’t wear boots, but he was too pleased to be warm again to care.
Prince Dareon was in front, leading them through a secret tunnel that left them outside at the back of the castle. “It’ll be a while before the guards realise we took Tristan with us,” he said. “Unless the Dark King orders them to go after us immediately.” He locked eyes with Tristan, raising an eyebrow.
“He most likely will,” Tristan replied, fighting the growing panic inside of him. The Dark King had been furious when he had left with Prince Dareon rather than stay. He saw four horses tied to some trees, and glanced at his four friends. He would have to share with one of them.
“I can cover the hoof prints in the snow,” Gwen said, holding up the small wand she had used against the Dark King earlier. “I’ll hang back.”
The Prince nodded, and gestured for Gareth and Finn to untie the horses. “I’ll ride ahead with Tristan. Finn, you ride with me, Gareth, you stay with Gwen to make sure we’re not being followed.”
Finn looked like he was about to object, but one glare from Gareth kept him quiet. “As you command.”
“Good,” Prince Dareon replied, climbing onto his horse. He took Tristan’s hand and helped him sit in front. With one arm around Tristan and the other holding the reins, he guided the horse away from the castle. “Tristan? Are you comfortable?” He grabbed his cloak to wrap it around Tristan as much as he could.
Tristan’s mind was still whirling with the recent events. Within an hour he had gone from being a prisoner of the Dark King to being free. He was terrified, staring up at the bright sky. His arse was sore from the rough fucking on the Dark King’s throne, and the part of him that had revelled in being the Dark King’s loyal obedient pet wanted nothing more than to run back and beg for forgiveness.
“Tristan?” Prince Dareon asked again, his voice soft. “You’re safe now.” A few inches taller and broader than Tristan, especially now that Tristan had lost some weight from a lack of food, the Prince shielded him from some of the cold.
He nodded dumbly, not quite believing it. This was wrong, he shouldn’t be here, he should be inside, pleasing his Master.
“Go,” Gareth told them. “Make sure he doesn’t fall off.”
Tristan winced when the horse began to walk, and again as it sped up. The Prince held him tight, and Tristan turned his head to see Finn right behind them, smiling encouragingly. Gwen and Gareth were sitting on their horses too, Gwen pointing down at the snow with her wand. Would her magic work?
It was a wild ride across the fields, and Tristan wondered where they were going.
